RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENERGY

The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

Breakthrough energy technologies were discussed in St. Petersburg

Three days prior to The Global Energy Prize Award Ceremony, the 2016 Global Energy Prize laureate, Valentin Parmon (Russia), spoke to the journalists of Saint Petersburg for the first time. Young Russian scientists - the winners of the All-Russian contest of Youth scientific projects “The Energy of Youth” – participated as well.

Valentin Parmon was acknowledged by The Global Energy Prize “for a breakthrough development of new catalysts in the area of petroleum refining and renewable sources of energy as a principal contribution into the energy of the future”.  The Global Energy Prize Award Ceremony is traditionally one of the central events of the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum. The President of Russia will award the Siberian researcher with a golden medal and a serious endowment sum – RUB 39 million.

Valentin Parmon is the author of many technologies that have brought a tremendous economic effect. Speaking about the need to develop new technologies in the petrochemical industry, Dr. Parmon said that Russia has billions of tons of non-standard fuel, which no one knows how to handle. The country has vast resources that it`s not able to process - tar sands, shale oil.

According to Dr. Parmon`s opinion, Russia has incentives for the development of the petrochemical industry because providing the deep processing of hydrocarbons is much more promising and cost-effective than exporting raw oil or gas. The scientist noted that the new developments in the petrochemical industry and the creation of alternative fuels scientists are pushed by a decline in demand for standard gasoline and stricter environmental requirements.
"What we use to demonstrate as an example of non-traditional catalyst solutions - is the ability to improve the efficiency of fuel use in the car by  30 percent   - just by installing a small catalyst. And the fuel use becomes 30% more efficient with no exhaust fumes! Also five coal-fired boilers that do not produce any exhaust fumes and in which fuel consumption is 2-4 times less than in  conventional boilers  are now operating in Siberia and Far East", - said Valentin Parmon.

Young scientists from 3 regions of Russia - the winners of the 2014 All-Russian contest of Youth scientific projects “The Energy of Youth”- also participated in the press conference.

Dmitry Solntsev from Nizhny Novgorod, Dmitry is working on a crucial matter – confirmation of operability of a new type generation reactor which is to provide power for the world's first floating nuclear power plant. It is now being constructed at the Baltic Plant in Saint Petersburg and it is unique. Its capacity is 70 megawatts. Thanks to it residents from remote areas of Pevek (Chukotka) and Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatka) who has no centralized power supply will be provided with an uninterrupted supply of electricity and heat and fresh water to 100 000 m3 /day for 40 years (this is the NPP`s operation period). The “heart” of this floating plant – is the reactor facility KLT 40S, and the task of the young scientist is to create a data base and to prove the reliability of the thermal performance of the reactor core.

Igor Anufriev from Novosibirsk, was exploring a steam-enhanced regime of liquid hydrocarbons combustion with no soot in the combustion products. This method may become revolutionary for the modern heat-power engineering as it allows a widespread usage of cheap, low-quality fuels (waste lubricating oils, lubricant fluids, oil processing waste) huge amounts of which are not used due to lack of efficient combustion technology. Accumulation of hazardous waste from oil refining is a serious problem: last year, waste from the production of crude oil and gas amounted to 7.1 million tons, from oil products production – 1.4 million tons. The effective combustion of fuel and environmental safety are vital in the process of their disposal. The scientist offers a solution - the original burner device with the power capacity of 10-50kW. It was patented in 2014. According to Igor Anoufriev, the method is quite simple: superheated steam jet is supplied it the combustion zone. This significantly intensifies the temperature of a fuel burning – up to 1500 C – which is 300 C above its combustion temperature on the air.

Evgeniy Titov is a scientist from Barnaul, his project is devoted to the important task of improving the electromagnetic safety of any objects, be it manufacturing units or municipal facilities. Those ways of electromagnetic radiations’ control that are available now, are not effective in monitoring the electromagnetic environment. Meanwhile sources of electromagnetic fields are becoming more widespread and thus risky to human health. Young scientist is working on a technology that can reasonably offer the necessary protective measures. The scientific novelty of the project is to establish a technical means of protection, computer simulations of electromagnetic radiation and the development of universal information activities and technical measures. The suggested modified technology of electromagnetic radiation control allows an ecological expert to reduce the time of one complete assessment test to just two hours. That is more than 4 times productive in comparison to the existing technologies.
