RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENERGY

The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

The press conference of the Global Energy Prize: “Innovations in energy-efficiency and energy saving in Russia”

Three days prior to the Global Energy Prize Award Ceremony, the 2016 Global Energy Prize laureate, Valentin Parmon (Russia), will speak with the journalists of Saint Petersburg for the first time. Young Russian scientists - the winners of the All-Russian contest of Youth scientific projects “The Energy of Youth” – will participate in the press conference as well.

The Global Energy Prize Award Ceremony entrusted by the President of the Russian Federation is traditionally one of the central events of the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum.  The 2016 laureate awarding, RAS Academician, research advisor at the Institute of Catalysis under the Siberian Branch of RAS, Valentin Parmon will be held on June 17. The scientist was acknowledged by the Global Energy Prize “for a breakthrough development of new catalysts in the area of petroleum refining and renewable sources of energy as a principal contribution into the energy of the future”. The President of Russia will award the Siberian researcher with a golden medal and a serious endowment sum – RUB 39 million.

Valentin Parmon is the author of many technologies that have brought a tremendous economic effect. New generation catalysts for production of motor fuels, particularly, diesel, complying with the Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards, were designed and industrially introduced under his leadership. Over 3 years of the project research, the scientist received RUB 500 million of the state support. The introduction of new catalysts at enterprises gave additional products - high-octane gasoline – for almost RUB 10 billion, that is 17 times more than was invested! 

Next, Valentin Parmon develops methods of fuel production from plant materials: wood pulp, rice husks. As well as he has managed to convert solar energy into chemical fuel. The efficiency of such conversion in catalytic reactors, created in the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, is 43% with useful capacity of 2 kW. One of the first such catalytic units was created in Crimea.

Young scientists from 3 regions of Russia - the winners of the 2014 All-Russian contest of Youth scientific projects “The Energy of Youth”- will also participate in the press conference. They will present to journalists the results of their work within the “Energy of Youth” grant.   

Thus, Igor Anoufriev from Novosibirsk and his team are exploring a steam-enhanced regime of liquid hydrocarbons combustion.  This method may become revolutionary for the modern heat-power engineering as it allows a widespread usage of cheap, low-quality fuels (waste lubricating oils, lubricant fluids, oil processing waste) huge amounts of which are not used due to lack of efficient combustion technology. 

The research of Dmitry Solntsev from Nizhny Novgorod will confirm operability of a new-type generation reactor, which is to provide power for the world`s first floating nuclear power plant.  Thus, the residents from remote areas of Pevek (Chukotka) and Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatka) who have no centralized power supply will be able to get electricity and heat in their homes at work. The young researchers had an important task to solve - to create a database and to prove a reliability of the thermal performance of the reactor core.

Evgeny Titov from Barnaul and his team solve the important innovation task of improving the electromagnetic safety of any objects, be it manufacturing units or municipal facilities. The ways of electromagnetic radiations` control available now, are known to be ineffective in monitoring the electromagnetic environment. Meanwhile the sources of electromagnetic fields are becoming more widespread and the danger to human health is growing.
The program of the press conference includes a Q&A session during which the participants will share their views on the development of Russian and global energy sector, as well as will provide additional information about their developments.
