The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.


On February 1, The Global Energy Association announces the beginning of application period for the 3rd All-Russian competition of youth implemented innovative projects in the field of energy The Energy of Breakthrough. Young scientists, students, post-graduate students of higher educational and research institutions as well as experts from specialized organizations under the age of 35, from all regions of Russia can participate in the contest. The deadline for the application is March 15. The winner will receive a personal award of RUB 1 mln.

According to the President of The Global Energy Association, Igor Lobovsky, “Russia is proud of talented young scientists and specialists in the field of energy, and the purpose of the Partnership and, in particular, The Energy of Breakthrough is to support them and to stimulate the further development of their projects. In addition to the monetary award, this competition is a great opportunity for them to present themselves and share their successful projects.”

The Global Energy Association established The All-Russian competition of implemented innovative projects in the field of energy The Energy of Breakthrough in 2014.

In 2017, The Energy of Breakthrough award won the scientist from Novosibirsk (West Siberia, Russia), Mikhail Chernetskiy. The senior research fellow at The Institute of Thermal Physics under the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences developed a project, which improves the efficiency and cleanliness of operation of coal power plants. The winner’s technology "The complex of mathematical models for the processes of coal fuels flare combustion, formation of harmful emissions and slagging of heating surfaces in coal-fired boilers",  allows to simulate the process of coal combustion in a virtual environment. The software package SigmaFlame, elaborated by Mikhail, helps to optimize the work of coal-fired boilers, improves the performance and reduces several times the number of  the necessary tests - all the calculations are made on a computer, without requiring a full-scale experiments. As the result, the innovative technology yielded significant savings. In particular, these studies were used in the reconstruction of the largest in Russia boiler installed at Berezovskaya peat-fired thermal power station, which allowed to increase its capacity by 100 MW. Innovation has brought RUB 180 mln net present value with a payback period of 3 years. In general, the technology has improved the work of more than 20 boilers in Russia and abroad.

Commenting on his victory the young scientist told: “Many engineering companies, which develop new solutions and equipment for coal-fired boilers, use this mathematical model to optimize the boiler operation, to solve various technical problems. The award is a great incentive for further work, which allows to create new and to improve existing energy equipment and technologies".

The competition is unanimous: the independent Russian and international experts examine the works without knowing the names and places of work or study of participants. After the evaluation, the Association will announce the winner on the Global Energy Prize website on the April 3 of 2017.
