The Global Energy Association elevates the age requirements for the Energy of Breakthrough contest
The Global Energy Association announces the crucial modifications of the terms and conditions of the 3rd All-Russian competition of youth implemented innovative projects in the field of energy The Energy of Breakthrough. Since now the young scientists, students, post-graduate students of higher educational and research institutions as well as experts from specialized organizations under the age of 45, from all regions of Russia can participate in the contest. The deadline for the application was extended till June 16 of 2017. The winner will be announced on July 3, he will receive a personal award of RUB 1 mln.
Recall that previously only the scientists under 35 could participate in the contest. The decision to elevate the age requirements was taken after analyzing the results of a research undertaken by the Association.
According to the President of The Global Energy Association, Igor Lobovsky, “During several months the Association has undertaken a study which has shown that the possible potential of Russian scientists who have their own projects implemented in the field of energy goes beyond the previously settled age limit under 35 years. The majoruty of the potential contestants manage to implement their innovative works in a more mature age".
The Association also extends the duration of the contest: now, you can apply up to 16 June 2017 due to the "reset" of the competition in regards to increased age limit for the potential participants. The second important reason is the change of the awards ceremony date. The award ceremony will be held at the International Energy Week in October 2017 in the framework of the Global Energy Prize jubilee events.

In 2017, The Energy of Breakthrough award won the scientist from Novosibirsk (West Siberia, Russia), Mikhail Chernetskiy. The senior research fellow at The Institute of Thermal Physics under the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences developed a project, which
improves the efficiency and cleanliness of operation of coal power plants. The winner’s technology "The complex of mathematical models for the processes of coal fuels flare combustion, formation of harmful emissions and slagging of heating surfaces in coal-fired boilers", allows to simulate the process of coal combustion in a virtual environment. The software package SigmaFlame, elaborated by Mikhail, helps to optimize the work of coal-fired boilers, improves the performance and reduces several times the number of the necessary tests - all the calculations are made on a computer, without requiring a full-scale experiments. As the result, the innovative technology yielded significant savings. In particular, these studies were used in the reconstruction of the largest in Russia boiler installed at Berezovskaya peat-fired thermal power station, which allowed to increase its capacity by 100 MW. Innovation has brought RUB 180 mln net present value with a payback period of 3 years. In general, the technology has improved the work of more than 20 boilers in Russia and abroad.

The competition is unanimous: the independent Russian and international experts examine the works without knowing the names and places of work or study of participants. After the evaluation, the Association will announce the winner on the Global Energy Prize website http://globalenergyprize.org/ru on July 3 of 2017.
