RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENERGY

The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

A million for an innovation: the winner of the Energy of Breakthrough contest 2017 was recognized

Today, July 3, results of the III All-Russian contest of implemented innovative projects in the field of energy, the Energy of Breakthrough was summed up. The 34-year-old associate professor of the Ural Federal University named after the first Russian president B.N. Yeltsin, Leonid Plotnikov from Ekaterinburg became the winner in 2017. The scientist will receive a reward in the amount of one million rubles for his work: "Integrated modernization of gas-air systems of reciprocating and combined internal combustion engines by improving gas dynamics and heat exchange."

Recall that the Global Energy Association established the program The Energy of Breakthrough in 2014. The participation is allowed for Russian scientists who under the age of 45. The main criterion is the availability of an implemented innovation project or a development in the field of energy.

"The goal of the Energy of Breakthrough contest is to support talented young scientists and give impetus to the further development of their projects. It is nice that this year we received twice as many applications as compared to last year; this indicates that the contest is gaining its popularity. Innovators from all over Russia take part in it; most of the work was directed from St. Petersburg, Tomsk and Sverdlovsk regions. The objectivity of the competition is unmistakable: each of the works sent to us undergoes two independent examinations," the president of the Global Energy Association Igor Lobovsky emphasizes.

Aside from the winner, the experts also highly appreciated the following innovators, who subsequently formed the shortlist of the contest:

1) Sergey Mikhalap (Tomsk) - "Wind turbine with a vertical axis of rotation";

2) Zulfiya Vakhidova (Republic of Tatarstan, Zelenodolsk) - "Energy-saving and ecological heat-and-power technologies, and devices for their implementation, using the solid fuel combustion process under extreme conditions (liquid medium, high pressure) obtained on the basis of computer simulation";

3) Andrei Mityakov (Saint-Petersburg) - "Gradient Thermometry in Heat Power Engineering";

4) Artem Mamontov (Belgorod) - "Control system for operating modes of multi-chamber biogas reactor of continuous feedstock utilization".
