
The Global Energy International Prize is one of the most prestigious international awards granted for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of energy which have proved of benefit to the entire human race.
The Prize was established in the year of 2002. The idea of founding the Prize was put forward by a group of famous Russian scientists, supported by some of the largest energy companies and approved by the President of Russia.
The award has taken place annually since 2003 subject to the following categories:
- discoveries, inventions and fundamental research providing new opportunities for energy industry development;
- development projects, engineering improvements and application-oriented innovations which create new ways of using energy more efficiently;
- discoveries, inventions and theoretical R&D projects opening up new energy sources as well as opportunities for using them;
- discoveries, inventions and research which have resulted in finding breakthrough approaches to addressing energy transmission and energy saving challenges;
- discoveries, inventions and research which have materially contributed to the solution of environment protection and development problems as well as opened up new and feasible ways of using innovative energy conversion methods.
The Prize may be awarded to a citizen of any country. All the decisions with respect to Prize award are made by the International Prize Award Committee comprising scientists and specialists from different countries and representatives of international research organizations.
Currently, the Global Energy Prize Fund amounts to 30 millions rubles.
The following persons are eligible to nominate candidates for the Global Energy International Prize:
- laureates of the Kyoto, Max Planck, Wolf and Balzan Prizes;
- laureates of the Nobel Prize in physics or chemistry;
- laureates of the Global Energy International Prize for R&D projects in the energy industry;
- members of the Department of Earth Sciences, the Department of Physical Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and Material Sciences, the Department of Energy, Machinery, Mechanics and Control Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences as well as international members of the above departments;
- the scientists who have been specially invited thereto by the International Prize Award Committee.
Self-nomination of candidates is not permitted.
Participating in each of the annual Award Ceremonies is the President of the Russian Federation.
The Global Energy International Prize pays a significant contribution to the global scientific and technical progress and actively promotes the shaping of a whole new image of Russia, one that will match the role it plays in the development of science and global business, in preservation of the environment.
